High Five for Friday

Today I'm linking up with From My Grey Desk to share 5 fun things I'm high fiving this week! It's been a good one so I'm excited to share...

1. Today I went to church for the first time since we moved here. (Remember Friday is like our Saturday but it's also church day so it's also kind of like our Sunday.) I loved it and can't wait to go back.

2. Emerson's birthday memory keeper came from Paper Coterie. It's even better (and bigger) than I expected it to be. I love it and now I want to order one to hold all of her newborn stuff. The best part was that I was able to get it for a REALLY good deal. I seriously love their stuff!

3. We officially know when we are moving back to the States. It's been up in the air for the last few weeks and it's been driving me crazy. It feels so good to know when and where we are going and I just feel so much more at ease.

4. I joined a ladies Bible study at the church! We're going to be doing Beth Moore's James study. Isn't it amazing how God gives you exactly what you are looking for? I usually am not the type to join something right away without getting my feet wet and getting to know some people but I felt like this study was meant for me. I can't wait!

5. Remember my Weekend Rewind linkup? When I took a blog break earlier this summer it kind of fell by the wayside. Now that everyone is getting back into the swing of things, I have decided to bring it back starting Monday. So write a post about your awesome weekend and come link up!

Thursday Thoughts and a Tasty Treat

Just because it's Thursday and my mind is full of nothing but randomness, that it what I'm sharing today.

-We took Emerson to the doctor today to get the rest of her 12 month shots. We left so suddenly back in May that she didn't get to finish all of her shots. She only had to get 2 today and she did great. I also got official measurements. She weighs 23 lbs 8 ozs and she is 32 inches tall. I was way off in my estimates on her height but pretty much right on with her weight. For a while she seemed kind of short to me but I think she has had a major growth spurt and she is now in the 90th percentile for her height and 55th percentile for her weight. Our sweet, growing girl!
I was trying to get a picture of her in her sweet little outfit before she left to go to the store with her Daddy. She thought he was leaving without her and it broke her little heart!
Luckily, all was well in her world again when she found out she got to go! That baby loves her Daddy!
-I'm not even going to post a word about my diet/exercise this week because it is embarrassing. Let's just say I've been a total slacker and leave it at that.

-How in the world is it already almost September? This year has just flown by, hasn't it? I feel like I need to get a move on with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas planning. Last year it totally snuck up on me and I just wasn't ready.

-I'm looking to start a new Bible study. Either by myself or maybe with a few friends. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've heard that several of the Beth Moore studies are really good but I'm not sure where to start.

-A few mornings ago Jesse turned on the TV before he left for work. We usually let Emerson watch a little bit of Elmo or Signing Time a few times a week but other than that we try not to have it on when she is awake and this is why:

Y'all! Girlfriend was in a trance! I am not exaggerating when I say that she did not move from this spot for a good five minutes, even when I started snapping pictures. She would definitely be a TVaholic if we would let her!

-I was able to meet a few friends for dinner last night and it was SO nice to get out for a bit and have some girl time! We talked about anything and everything and it was just so much fun. I definitely need to do that more often.

-We've been doing really well with meal planning and eating at home. I've had fun trying some new recipes and I've definitely found a few new favorites. I missed Tasty Treat with Mallorie and Allie last Thursday so I wanted to share one of my new favorite recipes this week:

This recipe (and the accompanying photo) is from Skinny Taste, one of my favorite recipe websites! If you haven't been there, go NOW! She has tons of delicious recipes with all of the nutrition information and Weight Watchers points.

Crock Pot Chicken Taco Chili

  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 16-oz can black beans
  • 1 16-oz can kidney beans
  • 1 8-oz can tomato sauce
  • 10 oz package frozen corn kernels
  • 2 14.5-oz cans diced tomatoes w/chilies
  • 1 packet taco seasoning
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 24 oz (3-4) boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • chili peppers, chopped (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
Directions: Combine beans, onion, chili peppers, corn, tomato sauce, cumin, chili powder and taco seasoning in a slow cooker. Place chicken on top and cover. Cook on low for 10 hours or on high for 6 hours. Half hour before serving, remove chicken and shred. Return chicken to slow cooker and stir in. Top with fresh cilantro. Also try it with low fat cheese and sour cream.
We put a little bit of avocado in ours and it was amazing! It makes a huge batch so we were able to eat it for several days. It was so good I can't wait to make it again. Yum!!

Happy Thursday friends! Hope everyone has a blessed day!

    Home Sweet Home: Master Bedrooms

Does everyone else still love Pinterest as much as I do? For a while I kind of stopped pinning, but lately it's been my favorite thing to do when I don't feel like doing anything else. So I guess it's safe to say it's my favorite distraction when I'm avoiding housework. Ha! I've also become mildly obsessed with Houzz.com. It's a lot like Pinterest, but it's all house photos. I have found SO many beautiful rooms there.

When I first found out we most likely weren't moving back to our home in NC, I thought for sure that my plans to DIY my little heart out would be put on hold. But I've been thinking about it a bit more and I've decided that I can still make our home pretty and fun to live in, wherever it may be. I may not be able to go crazy redoing things but I can at least paint and decorate to my hearts content. I think one of the first places I'll start is our master bedroom. I'm sad to say that I haven't done a single thing to our bedroom here. In fact, it's so plain and boring that I am embarrassed to show you. So instead, I thought I'd share some of my favorite master bedroom inspiration for our next house, wherever it may be. I don't really have a set idea of what I want to do, but these are a few rooms I'm loving.

We have dark wood furniture that I absolutely love but I am also really a fan of upholstered headboards. They just look so comfy! I also have really started loving painted vintage furniture. I used to want everything to match perfectly but I'm starting to find that I gravitate towards a more eclectic look these days. We still have a while before we have to even think about decorating again, but that certainly won't stop me from dreaming!

What do you look for in a master bedroom and where do you go for inspiration?

    Mission Organization: Baby Gear

It's weird to say, but I think I've had a harder time settling back in here than I did when we first arrived. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because the newness has worn off and I'm ready for a new adventure. Or it might be a combination of the horrible heat and the fact that we are on the downhill slope of our time overseas. I guess it's hard to feel settled when I know that we will be moving again soon. I'm sure the fact that we don't know exactly when or where we are going doesn't help my unsettled feeling. Either way, I've been trying to find things to keep us busy!

One of those things was to get more organized. I LOVE organizing stuff but I'm not always the best at keeping things organized. However, knowing that we may be moving to a tiny smaller house/apartment has really motivated me to clean out all of our closets and get everything into some sort of organized state.  My first order of business was sorting and packing all of E's outgrown clothes and baby gear.

I think I underestimated what a huge task that would be and just how many clothes our little munchkin actually has! I headed to Ikea to buy some bins because I had previously been storing everything in cardboard boxes. I'm so glad I decided to buy more bins that I thought I needed because I ended up using ALL of them.

To get started, I took everything out of the cardboard boxes and started sorting it by size. I also had quite a few items in her closet that needed to be put away.

This is what her room looked like during the sorting process:
     My sweet little helper:
I actually had fun going back through all of her tiny clothes! I could remember distinctly what she looked like in each sweet little outfit. At the same time I had a hard time believing that she ever fit in some of it! My how these babies grow too fast!
Finally, after hours and hours of sorting, folding, stacking, and labeling, I was done.
And this is what it looked like:
After I got these boxes put away, I put another large box at the bottom of E's closet. As I notice stuff getting too small, I just drop it in the bin. It's been helpful for me because I know I won't have to do another big closet clean out.

It feels so good to have it done and I love knowing that I have all of these precious clothes stored in case we have another baby girl in the future.

While I was going through baby gear, I cleaned out our bottle drawer and turned it into a sippy cup drawer. E hasn't taken a bottle in months, but for some reason I had held off on packing up those bottles. Now you can officially tell that a toddler lives here.

Since I packed up all of the bottle and baby food making accessories, I was able to turn one cabinet into a little mealtime headquarters for E. This cabinet now holds her dinnerware, bibs, and even some snacks that she can pick out on her own.
I saw this genus idea on Pinterest: Stick a hook to the inside of the cabinet to hang your favorite bibs. Love it!
During our little Ikea shopping trip, I also picked up a few sets of their adorable plates and cups. I love the bright colors and they seem really durable.
Although this was a simple change, it has made a big difference. I love having everything for her mealtime right where I can easily get to it. I also love that she knows where her special cabinet is. I've also been having her "help" me unload the dishwasher by putting her away her plates, cups, and bowls. It's too cute!

Throughout my little organizing spree I have learned one major lesson. LESS is MORE. Seriously, y'all. We have way too much stuff! I am feeling this overwhelming urge to get rid of stuff and simplify. So don't be surprised if you see more posts like this over the next few weeks. Momma's on a mission! :)

    Weekend Rewind

    This weekend:

We met up with Grace and Brittney for a playdate. The girls had a blast and they were so cute together. And I have to say that Brittney is looking totally adorable with her sweet baby bump.

    • We went to a barbecue. They had two bulldogs and Emerson was in love. They also had stairs with no baby gate, so I'm sure you can guess what Jesse and I were doing the entire time we were there. Even with all of the climbing we had a great time.
    • We made (and ate) a fresh batch of oatmeal pancakes.
     Check out that bed head:
    • We cleaned, cleaned, and cleaned some more. We did a deep clean of the whole house. Of course, I had to use some of my Pinterest finds like this floor cleaner and this Keurig cleaning tutorial.
    • Emerson found a new favorite spot to sit. She's so silly these days.
    • We started watching a new series called Suits. We've only watched a few episodes of Season 1 but we are already hooked.
    • I did a little bit of crafting and embroidery. I've made a few rookie mistakes along the way but I'm slowly figuring it all out. (A few of these items are from the last week. I didn't do all of them this weekend!)

    • We spent some time at the pool. The water seems to be cooling down a little bit, which is really nice.
    • We tried a new recipe. It's called Grilled Chicken with Avocado Tomato Salsa and it was AMAZING. I highly recommend it. I may or may not have been licking the bowl of the avocado salsa. As Emerson would say: Yum Yum!!

And I think that just about sums it up. How was your weekend?

    Time to Face the Music

Remember this post where I shared my baby weight loss story? And remember how I said that I thought that I had finally found the perfect balance of eating somewhat healthily and working out regularly. Well now I'm eating my words because I have completely and utterly fallen off of the weight loss bandwagon. I had really good intentions of working out while I was in Texas and I even brought some of my workout videos with me. Unfortunately, my laziness took over and I didn't do a single second of working out unless you count chasing my wild girl around.

Needless to say, my constant indulgence in delicious mexican food and my failure to break a sweat led to the inevitable. I gained back 5 whole pounds! And along with those 5 lbs came a lovely muffin top and too tight jeans. Boo! :(
I know that 5 pounds isn't really too bad but overall I just feel yucky and out of shape. In fact, I kind of feel like I'm back where I started in January. I hate that I ruined all of my progress in just a few short months.

For the first week that I was back here I was so jet lagged and tired from E waking up that I knew working out wasn't an option. This week I really haven't had any excuse but I still haven't worked out. Next week, however, playtime is over. I have to get my rear back in gear, my friends. Not to mention that I signed up for a half-marathon and it takes place in exactly 11 weeks!! And I haven't run a single mile in, oh I don't know, 3 months!! Yikes!!

So anyway, I'm sure you get my drift. I'm disappointed in myself for being such a slacker and I feel gross from all of the junk food that's passed through my lips so it's time to get back into my healthy groove. Here's my plan:

    1. Get back to using good ol' My Fitness Pal. I'm not sure exactly how many calories I need to lose or maintain so the first few weeks will be an experiment. My username is littlemoments11 if you want to be friends. I need all of the encouragement I can get!

    2. Workout. Duh. I'm shooting for 4-5 days a week and plan to do a mixture of running and videos. I know I'm going to die during those first few workouts but I'm hoping that whole muscle memory thing is true and my body can pick up where I left off.

    3. Eat healthy. By healthy I don't just mean counting calories, though I will do that too. I want to try eat as cleanly as possible while still enjoying the occasional treat. I'm going to shoot for clean eating 80 percent of the time.

    4. Drink water. I am really bad about this for some reason but I am making it a point to do better.

My biggest roadblock is finding the time to workout. I can't run during the day because I can't take E to the gym with me and it's WAY too hot to run outside. So, that means I either have to do it when Jesse gets home for work or first thing in the morning before he leaves. Since I really hate working out in the evening, I'm going to shoot for early AM workouts. I know it won't be fun to get up super early and workout but I think I'll get used to it after a few days. I also hope that it will help me feel more energetic throughout the day.

So, guys, that's my big confession for the week. I have been lazy and yucky all summer and I.am.done. Time to get back into shape.
