Please Pray

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to let you know that I won't be around for a few days/weeks. After a very brave battle with leukemia, our nephew, Matthew, has been sent home with hospice care.

There are obviously no words at a time like this so all I can say is please pray for sweet Matthew, his parents and big sister, as well as the rest of the family.

I'm linking up with Jenn for Currently.

current book(s)- Leaving by Karen Kingsbury (Started it over a month ago and have only finished a few chapters. It's good, I just can't seem to get into reading lately.) Someone just loaned me Body for Life and I plan on starting it today. When we return from Texas at the end of the summer I want to start a new workout program and right now I'm debating between Body for Life and Jamie Eason's Live Fit Trainer.

current playlist- kids songs by Elizabeth Mitchell. You Are My Sunshine and Three Little Birds are my favorites!

current color- I'm loving peach and turquoise- especially together.

current food- coffee and oatmeal

current favorite show(s)- Just finished the current season of Grey's. I thought it was amazing- and yes- I cried like a baby. Jesse and I started watching Breaking Bad but I couldn't get into it at all!

current needs- sleep. Emerson decided that 5:40 was a great time to get up this morning. I wasn't quite as excited about it as she was.

current triumphs- This is my 400th post! Wow- I talk a lot!

current banes of my existence- being sick. The flu is going around and I think I may have a touch of it even though I got a flu shot. I'm still functioning but I'm just not feeling like myself. I'm hoping it passes quickly and that Emerson does not get it.

current celebrity crush-  Carrie Underwood (In a I wish I looked like her kind of way) She is just stunning!
current #1 blessing- these two, of course!
current indulgence- I have been indulging in quite a bit of junk food this week! The Berry Cobbler I made is just about gone and we had Chinese takeout last night. That combined with my lack of workouts this week has left me feeling pretty yucky though so I think my time of indulgence is just about over.

current outfit- pajamas and a t-shirt but when I get dressed it will most likely be jeans and a fitted t-shirt. No plans for the day so comfy casual it is.

current excitement- Our weekend begins today.  I'm looking forward to a laid-back, relaxing weekend with the family. And honestly at this point I'm just looking for anything to help make the time go by faster until we head home in a few weeks.

current mood- blah.

current favorite quote or verse:
current wish list item- a new iPhone. I have the original and it is on its last leg. It barely works and the camera is pretty much useless for getting pictures of my little tornado.

current favorite product: benefit The POREfessional

I don't really wear a lot of makeup and I really don't know a lot about makeup but I do know that I love this stuff. I got it in one of my Birchboxes a few months ago and I have used it pretty faithfully ever since. It is so soft and leaves this super soft, powdery finish. It is one of the few samples that I actually liked enough to consider buying the full size product.

Just A Bunch of Randoms

-Emerson and I are both getting a little bit of cabin fever. With the heat, we really have to limit our outside time and there is only so much we can do to stay entertained inside. We found a free splash park (LOVE!) and we have also tried out one of the indoor soft play areas at the mall (also awesome!). At this point we're trying to find anything to do to just get out of the house for a few hours.

-Remember that long post I wrote last week about losing the baby weight and how I talked about my consistent workout routine? Well I think I might have jinxed it because I have been a total slacker for the last week. I need to get my motivation back ASAP.

-I feel like my brain is slowly turning to mush. I haven't finished a real book in months and the only thing I really read these days is children's books, blogs, and the occasional magazine. I need to find a good book to read and actually make time to read it.

-I've been tutoring my neighbor's son twice a week for the last 3 weeks and I have really enjoyed it! He's a first grader and that is my absolute favorite age to work with in reading. It has made me miss teaching just a *tiny* bit but not enough to go back. :)

-We are officially counting down the days until our trip home. I am so looking forward to seeing our families/friends and the change of scenery! It should make for a very fun summer. I feel like it just can't come fast enough.

-I made this Berry Cobbler recipe that I found on Pinterest yesterday. It is delicious and so incredibly easy! But it did remind me why I never make desserts. I.can'
-Our first baby, sweet Oscar, is very sick. He has a mass near his heart and lungs and they believe that it is cancer, though the biopsy was inconclusive. At this point he is still pretty much acting like himself but he is slowing down quite a bit and slowly losing weight. We have decided that we don't want to do any kind of invasive treatment due to his age (11-12 years) but we are heartbroken that we are most likely going to lose out sweet boy. I am just so thankful that we made the decision to leave him with my parents. They are taking such wonderful care of him and love him just as much as we do. Please say a prayer for our handsome boy!

A Weekend of Celebration

We had originally planned to be back in Texas for Emerson's birthday but we had to push our trip back a few weeks which also meant postponing her party. We could have held it here but we thought it would be more special if we were able to do it with our families. So- our sweet girl will be celebrating her birthday twice!

The first celebration was this weekend, starting on her actual birthday. Jesse and I got up at the crack of dawn so that we could wake her up with balloons and the birthday song. She was a little bit unsure at first...
But then she went crazy with the balloons.
We did our normal morning routine (with lots of extra kisses and snuggles) and then packed up and headed out for a day of fun. Emerson has become really interested in animals over the last month so I thought she would enjoy a trip the aquarium. I'm so glad we went because she loved it!

I would have to say that the penguins were here favorite.
After spending a few hours at the aquarium, we stopped for lunch. When the waitress found out that it was Emerson's birthday, she insisted on singing to her and bringing her ice cream. It was very sweet and Emerson was pretty excited.
Our next stop was Pottery Barn Kids where I had planned on buying Emerson her birthday present. I wanted to get her one of those kid-sized overstuffed chairs but we thought it would be a good idea to let her test it out first. She loved it but only if she was standing in it or leaning over the arms or the back. We decided it would just be one more thing for her to climb on so we ended up not getting it. I was bummed but I know that E didn't care one bit!

One of the best things about her being able to walk is that we can let her get out of the stroller and walk around. She's much more content this way and it wore her out so that she slept great on the way home.
By the time we got home we were all worn out but we decided to spend some time playing outside before bedtime. Emerson had a blast playing with one of the neighborhood cats.

On Saturday we got together with a few friends for birthday cake! My sweet friend Sam is pretty much a professional baker and she offered to make Emerson a smash cake. Didn't it turn out so cute? (This was the only "one" candle that I could find. Too bad it didn't match the adorable cake!)

I was so excited to let E go to town on the cake but she wasn't really into it! Oh well, at least she looked cute for the pictures.
Since she didn't really eat much cake, I decided that it was only fair for her to have a chocolate cupcake. It was her birthday weekend after all. She took her time digging in but once she got a bite she loved it!
I honestly couldn't have asked for a better weekend to celebrate our precious girl. And I have to say that I was surprisingly much less emotional than I thought I would be! I was just so happy. Happy to have such a beautiful, sweet, healthy baby girl and happy to be able to celebrate the best year of our lives. I didn't cry once but I will admit that I sang Happy Birthday to her at least 10 times and smothered her with kisses all day long.

Now I'm ready to head to Texas and get celebration number two underway!

Little Moments Like This

Emerson @ One Year

Dear Emerson,
The day you were born you changed me. Before- I was a woman, but I wasn't a mother. And then they placed you in my arms and I was instantly transformed. My role in this world was changed forever and I immediately felt more content than I ever had before. This last year with you has been the very best year of my life and I am quite certain that the title of Momma is the most important one I will ever hold. I am so proud of you and so lucky to be your Momma. You are beautiful and smart and you have the sweetest little heart. I know you are going to do so many amazing things in your life and we are so blessed that we get to watch it all happen. We love you more and more with each passing day, precious baby!

12 Month Stats:
Weight: 20 lbs 4 ozs (40th percentile)
Height: 29 inches  (50th percentile)

You are wearing Size 4 diapers and mostly 12-18 months clothes. You wear Size 3 shoes. You nurse about 4 times a day but you will be trying cow's milk very soon. I sure hope you like it! You eat 3 meals a day plus snacks. Right now your favorite foods are chicken, bananas, apples, broccoli, strawberries, and yogurt. You are obsessed with minestrone soup and whine until I give you a bite at lunch everyday. You love the heads of asparagus and can eat a whole bunch by yourself and you are still not a fan of avocado.  You love to drink water! This month you have been practicing drinking out of a cup without a lid. You do pretty well with it but you do pour it all over yourself quite often.
You go to bed around 7:30 and wake up around 6:30 AM.  For the last 6 weeks or so you have been waking up once a night but this last week you have gone back to sleeping through the night. Woohoo! Let's hope it continues! You are still taking two naps a day- one at 9:00 and one at 1:00. They range anywhere from an hour to two hours.
I would have to say that this has been the biggest month of growth for you. I am simply amazed at all of the new things you have learned. You started really walking 2 days after your 11 month birthday. Crawling is now a thing of the past- and so is any chance of keeping you still!
You have developed a new love for for stuffed animals and baby dolls and are rarely seen without at least one in your hand. Your favorites are your baby doll and your little stuff dog that looks like Oscar and Grace.
You are obsessed with phones! If we say the word phone or hear the phone ring you will immediately do the sign or hold whatever you have in your hand up to your ear. I gave you an old cell phone without a battery and you carry it around everywhere and "talk" on it. It cracks me up.

I let you watch a few minutes of Elmo at the beginning of the month and you were immediately hooked. Now we usually watch about 15 minutes of Elmo or Baby Signing Time each day and it is the only time that you will sit absolutely still. You are definitely a fan!

You love to dance. Anytime music is on you are dancing. You kind of sway your hips and move your arms. It is so adorable! You also love to run with a pillow and throw yourself down on it. You make me a nervous wreck!

You love to be tossed in the air and flipped upside down. We're still thinking gymnastics is in your future.
You are still very social and love to wave to people but you are starting to get a little bit shy when they talk to you. You will hide your eyes or bury your face in my chest. You have become picky about who holds you and will only go to me, Daddy, our neighbors Sam and Jeff, and Tye.

You are really starting to use your signs to communicate with us. You now know more, milk, eat, water, all done, Momma, Daddy, potty, hat, phone, dog, cat, bird, teddy bear, monkey, ball, please, cheese, light, shoes, banana, night night, wash hands, and brush teeth. You do most of these consistently but a few of them you only do now and then.

You can point out your belly button, head, hair, ears, nose, eyes, and hands.
You will hold up a 1 when I ask you how old you are, you blow kisses, give high five and you play patty cake. You recently learned to hide your eyes when I say peek a boo! It is so sweet.

You say mama, dada, bird, ball, belly button, bye bye, and hi and can tell us the animal noises for snake, tiger, lion, and cat.

You shocked us this month when you started throwing little tantrums when you don't get your way or we tell you no. You scowl and clap your hands once very quickly. Sometimes you will cry and sit down on the floor but you usually just do the clapping. I try not to laugh because I don't want to encourage you but it is pretty funny to see you mad. If you are giving me these looks now I can't even imagine what we are in store for during your teenage years.
Now that you are walking, you get into EVERYTHING! I put locks on all of the cabinets except one. You know it is your play cabinet and go straight to it every time we are in the kitchen.

You love the water! You will spend hours in the pool, at the beach, or the splash park. You are definitely our water baby!
You have become very interested in books this month. You bring me books to read to you all day long and will sign more when I finish one and you want me to read it again. Your absolute favorite book right now is Dear Zoo. You love when I make the noises for each animal.
Baby girl- it has been so awesome watching you learn so much this month. You have become such an independent little thing and you love to do things on your own. But you still love being held by your Momma and Daddy and we are more than happy to oblige. We love you so much and we look forward to many more years of joy with you!
