Pool Fail

10.11.2012

It's no secret that Emerson is a total water baby. I swear she could spend hours in the pool and be as happy as a clam. So, of course, we made good use of the hotel pool while we were in India. In fact, I think it's safe to say that we spent a majority of our time there. While most of our pool time was spent without Daddy, we were lucky that he got to join us for a few pool sessions.

When the two of them are together in the pool I can almost always expect some sort of shenanigans. Jesse throws E in the air repeatedly and all she can do is laugh and ask for more! I always tease him that they look like a pair of synchronized swimmers doing tricks out in the pool. I can pretty much thank Jesse for Emerson's complete comfort in the water. That child has no fear and it's all because of him.
On one of our last days in the hotel Jesse thought it would be fun to let Emerson "practice" her balance by holding her up on a kick board. He did it several times and she would sit up there forever. She loved it and we all thought it was pretty darn cute! As the sun was going down Jesse decided to try it one more time so that we could get a picture.
I'm sure you can guess what happened next.
Emerson immediately plunged to the bottom of the pool and Jesse dove right down after her. He (thankfully) grabbed her up within a second. That girl didn't even cough or sputter! I will admit that she looked a little shell shocked but other than that she was completely fine and ready to do it again. I guess all those times falling under while walking around in the baby pool has paid off because she has learned to hold her breath.

Crazy girl! Crazy Daddy!

The next day one of the lifeguards came over to me to talk about what had happened. He told me that he was so scared that he shut his eyes when Emerson went under.

All I could do was nod my head and think, "Me too, buddy. Me too!"

Babies have some sort of internal instinct to hold their breath when they go under. I took Hadley to a water babies class around 8 months and they had us dunk them under...scary! They assured us they would all hold their breath. Now when I take Hadley to the pool I put her under at least once, it's not her most favorite thing but she never cries .

I can't believe Emerson went all the way to the bottom, that would have been scary!

Oh no, this sounds like something my husband would do too. Is it bad to say that last picture is great though? At least you always have it to look back on say "remember that time..."

That is an amazing picture and she even looks like she is having fun! Good thing she knew to hold her breath......I still can't keep my son from opening his mouth when he goes under water. He just doesn't know that he's not supposed to drink the water.....oh well, maybe he will learn one day!

Oh my goodness!! I love that you got it on camera. One day you will all look back and laugh and tell her how she almost gave you a heart attack on vacation!!
