California Dreamin'

9.04.2012

On Friday I talked about how excited I was to finally know where and when we are moving back to the States. I didn't mean to leave you guys hanging. I just knew that it was kind of a long story so I wanted to save it for it's own post. So, let me back up a little bit.

Back in June I posted about our unexpected orders to sunny So Cal. At the time I didn't put a whole lot of thought into it because I really figured that they would be changed. However, as time went on Jesse and I talked a lot about it and we decided that we would try to pursue getting the orders changed so that we could go back to North Carolina like we had originally hoped. Although the adventure of California sounded fun, we ultimately decided that moving back to NC would be the best for our family. Mostly because of our house and the fact that Jesse's brother and his family live there. Logistically it just seemed like it would be the easiest way to go. Even when we made the decision, California was still in the back of my mind. Although I knew NC made the most sense, I felt kind of sad that we weren't even going to give the west coast a try.

So, about a week after I got back from Texas, Jesse called to see about getting our orders changed. It turns out that all of our talking and worrying and comparing was kind of a waste of time. There aren't any spots for us in North Carolina right now so it's not even an option. I have to be honest and tell you that we were both kind of in a state of shock. We just assumed that it would work out so we definitely weren't expecting to hear those words.

However, over the next week I did a little bit of research and I started to once again get excited about the idea of moving to California. Yes, the cost of living is high there and we will probably have about half the space we have now. BUT there is so much to do there and it just seems like it will be such a fun place to live. It's also closer to our families in Texas, which is always a plus. I really started to feel like it was meant to be...

But of course, things change fast in the military. Right as we had gotten used to the idea, we got more news! We were told that Jesse was needed here longer than expected and that our orders would have to be changed again. We weren't sure what exactly would happen. Would the dates change and the place stay the same? Or would our place change too? Just when I had finally wrapped my head around our big move, we were starting from scratch and everything was up in the air. Talk about being anxious! Even though it's not anytime soon, I just wanted to know. I'm a planner and it's hard for me not to know what is going to happen over the next year.

Finally, after about a week and a half, we got the news we were waiting for. (I know a week and a half isn't really a long time but if felt like forever!) The timeframe for our move has changed by just a few months but we are still heading to California. It fees so good to know even if it's not what we had originally planned on. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason so I know there is a reason that we are going to California and I feel completely at ease about it all. Finally!

Needless to say, I'm already thinking ahead about what life will be like on the west coast. I've been researching houses and apartments (holy moly they're expensive!!) and just trying to learn a little bit more about the area. I'm most excited about the beautiful weather, the abundance of parks and outdoor recreation, and the family friendliness. It seems like we will be able to find plenty of things to do for our sweet girl and that makes me incredibly happy.

We definitely plan to make the absolute most of the time we have left overseas, but we will also be slowly planning for the new life that we will be building in another new place.

 California, here we come!

Exciting! We were at Ft Bragg for 8 years and when we got out, we moved home to CA. So both places have a special place in my heart. Excited to hear as things move forward!

We felt the same way about our move out here since it was so far from family, but now I'm getting sad about leaving and starting to think I don't want to go back to dc and be right in the mix with everyone. I like the adventure the army allows us and figure there will be plenty of time to settle close to family afterwards :) we are heading to san Diego in two weeks for vacation, everyone says it is amazing!

How exciting! The military can be so frustrating! It seems like nothing is ever set in stone until the very last possible second. Not fun for us planners :)

I am sure you will have a great time in California! Being a planner you will have it all figured out by the time you get there.
