It's Good to Be Home

8.13.2012

Hey y'all! I'm happy to report that E and I made it safely back home! We arrived last Wednesday and we have been slowly adjusting to the time difference. Emerson has been waking up between 3:00 and 5:00 am every morning so that has been fun. :) I get lots of extra time with my sweet girl. I'm thinking it will be a few more days before we are both back to normal but we are thankful to be back home with Jesse.

I'm thrilled to report that our journey here was awesome. Well, as awesome as a 24 hour trip can be. I know it may sound silly, but I seriously prayed about it every day for weeks beforehand. Since the trip here was such a disaster (read about it here) I was pretty stressed out about heading back. Luckily, my prayers were answered and then some. Emerson was an absolute angel the entire time. Even though she only slept a total of about 5 hours she never had any meltdowns and was perfectly content to sit in her carseat. I don't know if it had something to do with all of the new toys I bought to bribe entertain her or the fact that she knew her momma needed her to be sweet. Either way I was just amazed at how well she did. (Look for an upcoming post with my toddler travel tips!)

I went through security too many times to count and it was a breeze each time thanks to the wonderful security agents. I was able to go through with Emerson's food and milk without a hassle and someone helped me get through with her carseat and all of our gear every time. My faith in humanity was definitely restored on this trip. There are nice people left in the world!

I also have to say that American Airlines was absolutely amazing this time around. I had THE nicest gate attendants and flight attendants that you could ask for! I was able to board early and one of the flight attendants helped me carry the carseat to our seat, which was a huge blessing. I didn't feel rushed or stressed so I was able to get us both settled in pretty easily. To say that it was the exact opposite of our last AA flight is a huge understatement.

Our second flight was on Etihad airlines. It was my first time flying with them and let me just tell you, they put most American companies to shame! The plane was amazing, the service was excellent, and they had really good movies showing. :) I was finally able to watch The Hunger Games. Loved it!

We did have one little incident on the Etihad flight that I feel is worth mentioning. Once we were on the plane and I had E all strapped in, one of the flight attendants came up to me and told me she needed to see the sticker on the carseat that said it was suitable for air travel. Of course the sticker is on the right side so I had to unbuckle the carseat and turn it sideways while E was in it. The flight attendant told me that the sticker didn't say what it needed to say so she would have to come back in a minute and check something else. By this time I had already flown several flights with it so I knew that it was certified for air travel, but I didn't want to argue with her. After she left I ended up calling over another flight attendant and I showed him the sticker. He said we were good to go and he would let the other girl know. So I got E all strapped back in and ready to go. About 2 minutes later the first girl came back and said she needed to see the sticker again. I showed her where it says it is certified (it's bright red and hard to miss) but she kept telling me that it wasn't the right sticker.

I have to be honest with you guys and tell you that I kind of lost my patience at this point. I'm usually pretty easy going but I KNEW I was right and I was not going to back down. She kept telling me that it didn't have what she was looking for but when I would ask her what it was exactly she was looking for, she couldn't tell me.  Finally she showed me the little card that had all of the stickers on it from each country and I found out she was looking at the one for Canada instead of the U.S. Once I showed her that, she saw that she had been wrong and she told me the seat was fine. Uh, hello! That's what I had been trying to say all long. I'm so glad it was resolved right at that moment because I felt like it was about to escalate into a full blown argument and I certainly didn't want to go to jail over a carseat. Haha! I swear, the things we do for our children! :)

So after all that, I was able to get E strapped back in and ready for our flight. A few minutes later the main flight attendant came over to apologize for the inconvenience, which I thought was really nice. He also brought over a glass of champagne, which was even nicer. Seriously though, it was an incredibly hospitable gesture and I was definitely impressed with their service throughout the whole flight. I hope we get to fly them again in the future because they are the best airline I've flown on, by far! (Even with the whole car seat debacle.)

When we arrived to the airport, Jesse was waiting for us with a rose for each of his girls! It was just the sweetest and it was the perfect ending to a very, very long day.

It feels great to be home but we are definitely missing my family. Emerson keeps going around calling for Mimi, Pa, Gracie and Izzy. We may be used to the long travel but I don't think we will ever get used to the accompanying good-byes!

So glad y'all had a wonderful flight home. I'm sure that was such a worry for you. I've only flied once alone with one my children and I was so nervous but thankfully it was okay.

Hopefully you both are back on track with the time soon. :)

I would of been so frustrated with that flight attendant. You handled the situation wonderful.

YAY! So glad this trip was better for y'all! Sometimes babies just "know" when they have to be good, don't they! ;-) I'm always impressed with EC when we fly alone.

As for the carseat, I would have lost it! So frustrating! But glad she finally figured it out!

I just knew this flight would be so much better for you! God answered your prayers, girl! I do not think the wonderful flight attendants, etc. were any coincidence!

So glad you are back safely but my heart does break for you a little that now you and E will be missing your parents and doggies. ;(

Glad you made it home safely! I agree that foreign airlines put domestic ones to shame, but funnily enough, we also had car seat issues when we flew (Korean).
