It's a Family Tradition

8.14.2012

One of the reasons Emerson and I stayed in Texas for so long was to attend our annual family reunion. This year was the 61st year, and up until I got married and moved away, I never missed a single one.
(The community building in Andrews, TX where the reunion has taken place for the last 58 years.)

Unfortunately, since 2001 I've only been able to attend 3 reunions. So I was beyond thrilled that I would get to go this year and take Emerson along with me. My brother, sister-in-law and nieces got to come down too. That was a real blessing! My brother works in Africa half of the year so it's rare for us all to get together and even more so to be able to all attend the reunion.

This was our first reunion without Grandmother and I know everyone there was missing her! It just wasn't the same without her there, but my parents and her brother and cousins did an excellent job of organizing, cooking, and setting everything up. We were also lucky to have Grandad there.
Here he is with his big brother. Pretty neat, huh?
He loves Emerson and she loves him too!

During the reunion, we did all of the normal reunion things.
We ate and ate and ate some more.
We gave lots of hugs and kisses.
We swam.

And we spent some time on the playground. Even though it was pretty hot!
And looked pretty darn cute while doing it all.
Of course, no reunion would be complete without a group shot. We didn't have a huge group, but it was still neat to have so many of our family members there.
And just for fun, here is a picture of the reunion in 1959. It was taken in the same building and on the same stage. My mom is on the front row (6th from the left) and my grandparents are in the back right corner.
Things have changed just a little bit since then but I'm so thankful that the reunion is a tradition that has lived on from one generation to the next. And I'm even more thankful that we were able to be there this year!

Does your SIL and the girls stay back in TX while your brother is in Africa?! How interesting that you both have lived in Africa too, not many people can say that! :)

I also LOVE the picture of Emerson about to jump in the pool... the ruffle butt and whats left of the baby chub legs melts my heart. I hope I get to meet her someday.
