All Is Not Lost

8.15.2012

Do y'all remember when I posted about my hard drive crashing right after I arrived in Texas at the beginning of the summer? Well if you don't, it did. And I lost everything on it. Luckily I've only had my Mac since January so it wasn't years worth of stuff but it was still quite a bit. And, of course, being the smart person that I am, I hadn't backed up a single thing. Not even one picture. It's a Mac, after all, so I just assumed that it couldn't crash. I'm not sure if it was the trip over that caused it or just a faulty hard drive, but either way I now know that Macs can crash.

I also know that heart wrenching feeling of losing thousands of pictures and videos. I tried to console myself by thinking about the blog and how many pictures are stored here. But in the end, I knew that there were SO many wonderful pictures that I had never posted and I was pretty heartbroken that they were lost for good. So I went through the whole summer thinking that most of those pictures were gone forever.

Luckily, when I got home last week I remembered that the guy at the Mac store had told me about a software program that can retrieve pictures that have been deleted off of your memory card. I had just cleared my card right before we came to the States so I really thought that it was a long shot, but I knew it was a worth a try.

I googled the name of the program and immediately downloaded it. I liked that it would scan your card for free to see if there were any files to be retrieved. As I watched it pop up one picture file after the other, I literally wanted to jump and down. When it finished scanning and told me that it had recovered almost 8000 pictures, I pretty much wanted to cry right then and there. Of course I didn't hesitate for a minute before shelling out the 40 bucks to get the full version.

Then I watched as it saved about 95 percent of my precious  pictures (that I thought were gone forever!) to my hard drive.  And guys, these aren't just any pictures. These are pictures of my baby girl. Pictures from her first time swinging, our mamarazzi photo shoots, her family birthday celebration, and so many more wonderful occasions that I never want to forget.

When I thought 6 months worth of pictures were lost, I tried to tell myself that it would be okay. That they were just pictures. But we all know that it is not true. They are so much more than that. They are fleeting moments in time. They are precious memories of the glorious baby days that fly by all too quickly. They are snapshots of our life as a family of three. They are.......priceless.

I'm so glad you got them back!!! I have GOT to back up everything onto an online site. I'm like you and have a ton of pictures I don't even blog! Are you going to do that this time? If so, what website are you going to use?

I am so happy for you that you were able to get them back. It's great that you had a good attitude about it either way, but you are absolutely right... those are precious firsts on that camera!

I am so glad that you were able to recover most of your photos. I can't imagine how heartbroken I would be if that had happened. Those special memories caught on "film" are ones that you will be able to remember and SEE for the rest of your life. :)
