Never Say Never

5.16.2012

I think most of us can agree that we have a vision in our heads of what kind of parent we will be. We read the books and the articles and we make plans for each stage in our babies' lives.  And, of course, we make a list of the things we will NEVER do. Even if we don't verbalize this list, it's there in the back of our minds. And as the baby grows, we slowly, but surely, do at least half of the things that we said we'd never do.

Here are just a few of my nevers. I won't tell you that I've done all of them which ones I've done, but let's just say I've learned a very big lesson throughout this last year.

I said I'd never...

....have baby toys taking over my living room.

.....breastfeed in public.

......be emotional about weaning.
......resist leaving her with a babysitter.

......let the baby sleep in the bed with me.

....let her taste french fries, ice cream, or any other form of junk food.

.....use my spit to wipe something off of the baby's face.

.....talk nonstop about my baby and all the cute things she does.
.....breastfeed past a year.

.....say that she's a genius every time she learns something new.

......have a hard time moving her to her crib.

.....examine the contents of a dirty diaper.

.....discuss said contents.

......let her watch any TV whatsoever before she's 2.

.....let the blog turn into a full on Mommy blog.
......spend more on baby clothes than I do on my own.

.....freak out at just the thought of sending my girl to daycare.

.....start thinking about baby #2 before baby #1 is a year old.

....get emotional about how fast time goes by.

....become a gusher. You know what I mean... one of those Moms that never stops gushing about how amazing/cute/sweet/smart her baby is.
After writing out this list, it's apparent that I have learned one major lesson in my first year of motherhood: NEVER SAY NEVER!

Hi Tami,
I remember pre-kids having a list like that! Especially the breastfeeding, I thought for sure not past 1 year. It took 22 months!
I have two girls 7 & 12 and I still find myself doing things I said I'd "never" do.
Great blog, TFS!

We are expecting baby numero uno in October and I (shamefully) have started a list of nevers. Maybe I should ditch the list : )

Adorable post. I have to agree that that was a huge lesson for me too. And I am totally a gusher and think my baby is a genius every time she does something new too! Oh, how motherhood changes you! Have a great day girl!

Great post idea. I've often thought about the things I said I'd never do that I am, in fact, doing. Ha! Sometimes I think if you say you never will....you will. It's like a curse, haha!

Haha... Oh how motherhood so often serves up a big ole piece of humble pie! I said " never "to so many things and STILL find myself doing it sometimes! I try to tell myself that until you are in the situation yourself, you don't know what you would do!!

Haha, I love it! I think I had a lot of the same nevers that I have definitely already done :)

I may or may not have shown my husband the contents of a poopy diaper once or twice due to the large amount or the things that were in it.

I also have eaten food off of my daughters face...and ive eaten food that was once in her mouth. What is wrong me me? That is so disgusting.
