My Top 10 Baby Essentials: 0-3 Months

12.02.2011

When I was pregnant, I spent hours on the internet looking at baby products and trying to decide what I really needed. It was a pretty daunting task and I still ended up with things that I didn’t need.

So, I thought it might be helpful for the Momma’s-to-be out there to talk about some of my favorite baby products for the 0-3 month crowd. I am no expert- just a new momma- sharing what I found to be essential for those first few months.

1. Cloud B Sleep Sheep

We have the travel version and I can honestly say that we have used this every.single.night since Emerson was born. I love that it’s small and portable so we can use it anywhere and Emerson loves it because it helps to drown out all of the other noise in the house. I consider this a must-have.

2. Summer Infant Swaddle Me

Summer Infant Swaddleme Cotton Knit

Emerson slept so much better when she was swaddled but she learned how to break out of her swaddles pretty quickly. The Swaddle Me made swaddling so much easier and it helped us to actually keep her swaddled.

3. Aden + Anai Swaddle Blankets

aden + anais Cotton 4 Pack Muslin Swaddle Blanket

These blankets are perfect for everyday use. They’re big, so they can used be swaddling, but they are lightweight and soft. We still use these blankets daily.

4. Medela Quick Clean Steam Bags-

Medela Quick Clean Micro-Steam Bags 5 ct (Quantity of 6)

I didn’t get a bottle sterilizer because I really wasn’t planning on using bottles too often. However, we had a bit of trouble with nursing for the first two weeks so I did a lot of pumping and bottle feeding. That meant a lot of bottle cleaning. I love the Medela steam bags because they are so easy and so quick. In just a minute and a half, your bottles are sterilized and ready to go.

5.. Medela Pump in Style

If you plan on nursing, I highly recommend getting a good quality pump. To be honest, pumping is a major pain. I can’t imagine doing it with a single pump or a manual pump. I think there are a few other essentials for breastfeeding but I’ll share those another day.

6.Chicco Cortina Keytfit 30

Chicco Keyfit 30 Infant Car Seat and Base

I love this carseat so much. It comes with a newborn insert that supports their head and  removable pads that makes them fit more snugly. It is, by far, the easiest carseat I’ve ever seen when it comes to strapping the baby in. It has one strap at the bottom that you pull to loosen or tighten the straps. Trust me-  you want to be able to do that quickly when your sweet little munchkin is having a meltdown.

7. Fisher Price Bouncer

Fisher-Price Bouncer

Another must have for those times when you need to be hands free. I often put Emerson in it and took her in the bathroom while I took a shower. It was so nice because I could peek out and check on her and not have to rush through my shower worrying if she was okay. It was something we definitely used on a daily basis so I consider it to be worth the price.

8. Infantino Breathe Carrier

I was lucky enough to receive an Ergo carrier as a baby gift. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work that well with newborns, even with the insert. So I bought the Infantino in the meantime and I loved it. It’s not very pricey so I think it’s worth it to be able to wear your baby until he/she is big enough for a better carrier (like the Ergo- which I’ll talk about in my next post.) I think it’s best for babies under 12 lbs. because it does start to hurt your back after a while.

9. Fisher Price Rock N Play

Fisher-Price Newborn Rock 'n Play Sleeper

Emerson slept in this from weeks 2-10 and I’m convinced it’s what got her sleeping through the night. She could have continued using it for much longer but we moved and I didn’t want to ship it. It’s a great size for keeping baby in your room those first few weeks (or months) and Emerson always seemed very comfortable in it. This, to me, is another must-have.

10.Boppy

The boppy was (and still is) used for everything- feeding, tummy time, propping, etc. It’s another must have on my list. I recommend getting at least two covers so that you will always have one if the other is being washed.

So- there you have it- my list of essentials for the first 3 months. I think it all comes down to personal preference and finding what works for you and your baby. On that note, I wanted to share my favorite diapers and wipes, too. I remember walking down the diaper aisle at Target when I was pregnant and being completely overwhelmed with all of the choices.

My favorite diapers, hands down, are Pampers Swaddlers. They’re thin and super soft but also great at preventing leaks. Emerson wears these all night and she has only had one leak. We have tried Huggies but we keep going back to the Pampers because we like them so much. They are a bit more expensive but I think they’re worth it.

Pampers Swaddlers

For wipes, I really love the Pampers Thick Care. The thickness of these wipes makes diaper clean up so much easier. We recently had to use some other type of Pampers wipes while we waited for the Thick Care wipes to come in and I hated them.  I just love the thickness of the Thick Care- they don’t fall apart when you use them. I use the unscented.

Hopefully this was helpful for those of you with sweet babies on the way. I plan on doing another post for 3-6 months as well as a post on the baby items that we didn’t find useful soon, so be on the lookout for that.

Disclaimer: I was not compensated in any way for this post. I linked all of the items to Amazon just for the simple fact that it’s easy.  It’s also where i do a lot of my baby shopping- especially for diapers and wipes because they have great deals when you join Amazon mom and sign up for Subscribe and Save. If you want more information about that, send me an email. Smile

I had practically all the same items in my list! The Rock 'n Play was great for us too, we used it for naps in the first few weeks!

Great post! These are always so helpful!
I have one of these started in my drafts....including stuff we didn't use as well! I think that's always helpful to know. I was surprised by some of the things I thought I'd use all the time and rarely have!

I 110% agree with all of those things. Except I needed a swing most of all with my first and with my second he could have cared less about it. Funny how it changes baby to baby!
